PINDARI KAFANI GLACIER TREK Photo Gallery
Pindari - the most accessible glacier in the Kumaon region , is located at 3820 m in Almora district , measuring 3 KM in lenght nad 0.25 km in breadth. It owes it`s existence to vast qunatities of snoe precipitated from nandadevi and other lofty summits of the greaterHimalayan Range. It is named after pindari river which originates in the Traill`s Pass above the glacier. The trek to pindari glacier, immensely breath taking , takes 8 days to complete. May to June & Mid September to October are the best seasons .i In the former period , though the snow is yet to melt , flowers can be seen profusion. The later season is more popular due to clear skies.

Day 02 : Arr. Delhi & dep. for Kathgodam by train in the evening. Overnight train journey. Day 03 : Arr. Kathgodam & proceed to Base Camp Bageshwar. At Loharkhet, trekkers halt at KMVN's Trekkers Hut. Day 05 : Loharkhet to Khati (2,680 M.) 17 kms. - This is the toughest part of the trek as the route winds etermally upwards, rising over 1000 meters. The Dhakuri Banjak ridges offer a view of the snow clad Nanda Kot summit (6860 m.) to the east and Maiktoli (6804 m.) to the west. The only descend on this continuous uphill route is the last stretch of a kilometer that ends at TRC, Dhakuri. Dhakuri to Khati (2,210 m.) 8 kms. After having lunch at Dhakuri camp we proceed towards Khati to conclude the days march. This is the last habitation enroute and lies at the confluence of Pindar and Sunderdhunga rivers. Day 06 : Khati to Phurkia (2,575 m.) 11 km. - After a night halt at Khati, we undertake the third leg of the journey. The route now passes through dense forests along the Pindar river. The valley, formed long ago by the glacier, when its extent was greater, has spectacular waterfalls plugging down its sheer sides. Bamboo culmps, ferns, white Iillies and wild strawberries can be encountered depending on the season. There are a number of birds-the hawk, cuckoo, the whistling thrush, redstarts, wagtails, jays, lammergier and serpent eagles. Dwali To Phurkia (3,260 m.) 5km. At Dwali, the valley forks as a tributary descending from Kafni glacier joins Pindar river. We prefer to continue walking upto Phurkia. At Phurkia, the tree line gives way to alpine pastures, and shepherds can be seen guiding their large flocks across the grassy uplands. The avifauna too changes to glossy black choughs and snow white pigeons can be seen instead of the doves and common crows. Day 07 : Phurkia to Pindari Glacier (3,820 m.) 6 km. - After an early start, enjoy a close view of the Pindari glacier's snout form the Zero point (3820 m.) Though the movement of this immense river of ice is imperceptible, the rubble it has collected on it, slides down the mountains and is visible in huge masses and from the cavenous snout emerges the Pindari river, rushing down the valley to join the Ganga. Phurkia to Dwali (2,575 m.) 5 km. After visiting the Pindari Glacier we have lunch at Phurkia camp and return to Dwali for the nighthalt. Day 08 : Dwali To Kafni Glacier (3800 m.) and back (26 kms.) - Early morning we start for the Kafni Glacier, which lies to the left of the Pindar valley under Nanda Kat. The tranquillity prevailling in this region has a special charm. It is also rich in wild life. Turning right at Dwali and following the course of river Kafni, one arrives at Byali 11 km. later. From here the glacier is 2 km. away. The main Himalayan summits visible from Kafni are Nanda Kat (6860 m.) and Nadabhanar (6104 m.) After visiting Kafni Glacier we return to Dwali camp for the nighthalt. Day 09 : Dwali- Khati - Dhakuri - We start our return journey from Dwali, have lunch at Khati and reach Dhakuri camp for nighthalt.
