Kanha Tiger Reserve is the birth place of Rudyard Kipling’s world famous novel - The Jungle Book, is undoubtedly the best managed tiger reserves in Asia. Situated at a distance of 175 kms from Jabalpur, in Madhya Pradesh, Kanha has abundance of wildlife and variety of species. This Tiger Heaven is located in the Maikal Ranges of the Satpura Hills in central Indian Highlands. The Kanha Tiger Reserve (1945 sq.kms) created in 1974 is the only habitat of the rare hard ground Barasingha (swamp deer). This tiger reserve comprises of sal and bamboo forests.

It is a pleasure of wander on mapped circuits accompanied by guides from the forest department, who help us to identify the animals and birds. It’s a thrilling experience made more so by sighting of the tiger, or even a tiny mouse deer or a 12 horned deer barasingha.

Mammals : Kanha has 22 species and the most easily spotted are three - stripped palm squirrel, common langoor monkey, jackal, wild boar, cheetal, barasingha, blackbuck etc. Less commonly seen are tiger, hare, dhole or Indian wild dog, barking deer, gaur etc. Rarely seen are Indian fox, sloth bear, stripped hyena, jungle cat, panther (leopard), mouse deer, nilgai (blue bull), ratel (Indian porcupine), wolf, Indian pangolin, the Indian otter and civet.

Birds : Kanha has around 200 species of birds. Good vantage points are in hills where the mixed and bamboo forests harbour many species. The sal forests do not usually afford good viewing. Early morning and late afternoons are the ideal times and binoculars are invaluable. Commonly seen species are cattle egret, pond heron, black ibis, common peafowl, rachet - tailed drongo, hawk eagle, red - wattled lapwing, various species of flycatcher, woodpecker, pigeon, dove parakeet, babbler, mynah, Indian rollar, white throated kingfisher and grey hornbill
