Bandhavgarh National park was the former hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Rewa and at present is a famous natural hub for White Tigers. White Tigers, now a major attraction around the world’s zoos, were first discovered in Rewa, not far from here. Set amidst the Vindhyan ranges, the park has a series of ridges running through it. The terrain is broken, with rocky hill ranges, running roughly east west, interspersed with grassy swamps and forested valleys.

The National park is dominated by the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort, located on a plateau and can be reached after a steep climb. The fort is now in ruins, its monuments and tanks beings gradually reclaimed by the forest, thus providing additional shelter for wildlife such as Black Bucks.

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is known not only for tigers but also for its rich historical background and biodiversity. There are 250 bird species belonging to 53 families, out of which 138 are resident, 26 are local migrants and 86 are migrants. As a thumbrule, forest edges are rich in bird population particularly around the moist localities

Bird watching in Bandhavgarh tiger reserve is an added pleasure for nature lovers and the reduced pace while driving allows for a fuller appreciation of the green sal forest amidst this beautiful landscape. Some of the important birds of the reserve are Lesser adjutant stork, Malabar pied hornbill, sarus crane, emerald dove, pitta, paradise flycatcher, white throated ground thrush, crested serpent eagle, crested hawk eagle and peregrine falcon. In addition to this, do not forget to check top rocky cliffs for Vultures evident with the white colour of their droppings.
